Where possible, Styleworks is designed to work just like the list of preferences in your style sheet or house style. You don't have to map out every find and replace, you simply write your preferred term, and Styleworks will try to match it for you.

Add a known term

  1. Click into a Preferences List (for example, Spelling Preferences) or press the green plus button.

  1. Type your preferred term. For example: advisor (with the “o”).

  1. Watch the info bar at the right of the line turn green.

Green means advisor is a known term: Styleworks has recognised it and automatically figured out what you mean — look for adviser with the “e”, and suggest advisor with the “o”.

And that's not all. Hover over the green info bar to see the expanded terms list - the other preferences inferred from that one term. In this case, the plural is added too.

One line in your style sheet becomes a whole family of checks.

Add an unknown term

Styleworks can't know every term. When you add something it doesn't recognise — an unknown term — the info bar goes red, meaning Styleworks needs one more piece of information: the search term, the form PerfectIt should look for.

For example, AMA's 11th edition prefers kidney to renal in most situations. Styleworks doesn't know that, so typing “kidney” gives a red info bar. Add the search term in either of two ways:

kidney (not renal)

kidney should replace renal

(not …) and should replace are reserved words they tell Styleworks how to treat the terms around them. Both forms mean the same thing.

It works for capitalization too

The same system covers lots of PerfectIt checks.

For capitalization, enter the preferred form first. Ibuprofen is a generic drug name, so it's usually lowercase:

ibuprofen (not Ibuprofen)

That's now part of the preferences for this style.
