Glossary and Styleworks Terms

New to Styleworks and style creation? Here's what everything is called in the app, in our guides, and in PerfectIt.

Documents

Term

What it means

Styleworks document

The general term for anything you create in Styleworks.

Style sheet

An editor's record of the editorial decisions made during an edit: the decision log of the editing world. Created while working on an editing project.

House style

Usually produced by an organization to communicate its language preferences. Usually created before an editing project begins.

Building Blocks

Term

What it means

Line

A line of text in a Styleworks document. Lines can be dragged and dropped around the editor, and turned into different types of line (headings, lists, and so on).

Heading

A line that starts a new section of the document. There are three levels of heading to help you structure your document. Regular headings stay in Styleworks.

Preferences List heading

A special type of heading that marks its contents for export to PerfectIt.

Term

A line in a Preferences List containing a word or phrase to be considered for export to PerfectIt.

Terms and Matching

Term

What it means

Preferred term

The form you want — normally all you need to enter. If it's a known term, nothing more is needed; if it's an unknown term, add the search term too.

Search term

The “bad” form PerfectIt should look for. Needed when the preferred term is unknown to Styleworks — add it with (not …) or should replace

Known term

A term Styleworks understands, so only the preferred term is needed for export to PerfectIt. Shown with a green info bar.

Unknown term

A term Styleworks doesn't know, so the search term must be provided before it can be exported. Shown with a red info bar.

Expanded terms list

Hover over a green info bar to see this (potentially long) list of find-and-replace terms — exactly what will be exported to PerfectIt for that term

Adding Information to a Term

Term

What it means

Reserved words

Words with a specific meaning to Styleworks when preparing a line for export — for example, because, for entering explanations.

Explanation

Extra guidance shown to users when the term is found in PerfectIt (PerfectIt calls these Style Instructions). Added with because or and explain that

Annotation

A private note added to a term with //. Annotations stay in Styleworks and are never exported to PerfectIt.

The Editor

Term

What it means

Info bar

The red/green bar with an “i” icon at the right side of each term. Hover over it for more information about the term. Red means an unknown term; green means a known term

Action menu

Right-click a line, or click the six dots to its left, to open the action menu. Use it to change the line type or perform extra functions on a Preferences List heading

Command bar

The bar at the top of the editor with undo/redo, copy, export and more.
