Organising your style sheet with headings
Styleworks isn't just a system for adding preferences to PerfectIt - it can be the home for your entire style sheet or house style.
We built it after watching editors create a style sheet in one document, then have to build it all over again in PerfectIt.
Why not do the whole thing in one place?
Two types of heading
There are two types of headings in Styleworks:
Regular headings (Heading 1, 2 and 3) are for sections that stay in Styleworks - introductions, notes, anything that isn't an enforceable preference.
Preferences List headings (the ones with the green button
) are for sections that can be exported to PerfectIt and enforced automatically.
Build out the rest of your document
Use regular headings for everything that's useful to keep with the style but isn't for PerfectIt.
For example, start with an introduction describing the style sheet.
Nothing under a regular heading affects what's exported - you're just keeping everything linked to the style in one place.
Editing fiction? Add sections for character continuity or world building.
Editing non-fiction? Keep track of citation rules and complex industry terminology.
Split your preferences into sections
Preferences List headings are adaptable too. The first list is called Spelling Preferences, but you can rename it to anything, and add more lists.
If you have more than one set of rules to enforce, split them up. For example, a section for capitalization rules, another for spelling, and another for plain English.
